55My daughter adopted a pup named Sumter from Pawfect Match about 1-1/2 yrs ago and had wonderful things to say about this rescue group. We grew to love Sumter so much that we pondered the idea of adopting one of our own if it could be like him. Interestingly enough, it turned out that 2 of Sumter's sisters were still waiting for their forever home! My daughter helped set up a meet and greet in January 2023 and my husband & I traveled to NC. We returned to MD with his sister Clover and we are living our happily ever after! Pawfect Match was wonderful to work with, as was Clover's foster family. We are so happy to have her in our lives!
55Pawfect Match Rescue is absolutely an amazing organization! I’ve partnered with them to facilitate adoptions by having a joint event with my Real Estate business. We are hosting it again this year and I can’t wait to be part of more precious pups finding their furever home. All of the volunteers and fosters are selfless, loving and available. I love Pawfect Match!

55Courtney started Bullies 2 the rescue many years ago and I was fortunate enough to find her when I was scrolling through Facebook after the loss of my 2nd bulldog. I had gotten Rocky as a rescue and had him for 6 years before he unexpectedly passed away. Up until then, I didn't know about Bullies 2 the Rescue but I soon learned about the rescue, it's owner and founder and its great volunteers. If at all possible, they will do whatever it takes to save, treat, rehome and give a bulldog the best rest of it's life that is possible. Courtney works tirelessly and makes sacrifices so that no bulldog is turned away. I rescued my third bulldog, Trudy Sue, and immediately became a part of a much bigger world. Everyone will happily support a new bulldog parent and fundraiser for the Bullies still needing help. Courtney has a dream to have a facility that would be a place to treat and shelter bulldogs in their time of need. I don't know of anyone who deserves this more than Courtney and her rescue. Please strongly consider this rescue as your top rescue.
55I am amazed by the Sky Sanctuary everyday. I can't wait to see all of the successful rescues and journies of these animals everyday.

55Buddy came to us in May 2020 as a 7 year old stray. He is my 3rd Jack Russell Terrier. He was anxious to run during the first 24 hours. After he realized that a nice fenced in yard and lots of walks were great; he made me his human. He settled in nicely and displayed impeccable house manners. We are grateful that he was rescued. Freedom Ride Rescue followed up on my references and completed the adoption quickly. Thank you FRR!
55Three cheers for Freedom Ride Rescue! Adopting our sweet boy, Denali, and fostering many dogs for this organization has been so rewarding and I will cherish all of these memories. Freedom Ride has an incredible team from start to finish who work diligently behind the scenes, even in stressful situations, and make the entire process smooth. The Rescue’s fosters have transparent communications to potential adoptees and screen each family to ensure the dogs are set up for success and placed with families who will give the dog the best forever home! Freedom Ride has a great support system and network for all things dog-related for their “alumni.” Freedom Ride is saving the lives of countless dogs in rural counties in North Carolina. Thank you, FRR!

55Great dedicated people.
55I love MPR! I got my boy Kevin from them, and then when I started fostering, ended up with a few Very Good Boys that came through my doors, until my little Joanie came along. I finally had to agree that some fosters are just fails from jump :) My husband was so sure that we'd just have a few pups here and there... just couldn't let this girl go. Him as much as me. Called the office to update them on Joanie's first day in my home, and the response was "when you figure out she's the Bestest Girl in the World, just call us back and pay her adoption fee over the phone". Ever the rebel... I popped into the office with cash just to share my happy dance with the staff. Such caring and wonderful people there, I'm so happy I encountered them when I did, as I'm pretty committed to being a pet parent for life :D

Shelter Dog Transport Alliance

Shelter Dog Transport Alliance Logo

Shelter Dog Transport Alliance

Shelter Dog Transport Alliance partners with over a dozen NC county shelter systems & beyond that are experiencing overcrowding and are in need of valuable space. Our aim is to work together to ensure every shelter dog gets a second chance at life. A recent study by Best Friends Animal Society has North Carolina ranked #3 for the highest shelter euthanasia rate, behind only California and Texas. In order to tackle this statistic we are currently partnering with animal rescues in New England as well as Canada to relocate our dogs to safety and into loving homes when our shelters become critically full. We decided to initiate this transport program because we never want to have to euthanize any of our shelter dogs because we simply don’t have a place for them. We need to reduce overcrowding in our shelters so that we always have room to compassionately care for abandoned or neglected animals. Because of space limitations, many of our shelters have waitlists for people wanting to surrender animals. This has sadly led to the regular practice of individuals ‘dumping’ helpless puppies, elderly animals, or animals that are simply unwanted by roadsides or empty fields. Our ultimate goal is to save lives, however, as we do so we are simultaneously working towards addressing the root causes that lead to our shelters being overcrowded. The Shelter Dog Transport Alliance is a life saving partnership that will not rest until our State is no longer a deadly statistic. The Shelter Dog Transport Alliance is an all-volunteer 501c3 animal transport program based in Asheville, NC and has safely relocated more than 8,000 shelter dogs & cats since 2020. We also provide foster care, medical services and shelter mentorship.

Snicker was a burrowing, grumble cranky-pants who found a new lease in life after the Kreitzer crew introduced this mister yappy-pants to us. His name WAS José and I had just lost my uncle by the same name. I guess we knew this was going to be our guy at the adoption event but The Kreitser folks made sure we took the time we needed to make the best decision for our family. SNICKER ended up making the final decision of picking us. We took him home and he's a little brother to a Humane Society rescue and big brother to a street rescue now.

55I first encountered this rescue several years ago, I had been brought a litter of kittens who were only a couple weeks old that were sick and failing to thrive. I was completely devastated and didn’t know where to turn so I started reaching out to rescues. The only one to respond was in a neighboring county and immediately told me to bring them to their vet for treatment. If not for their help, I would not have the one who survived seven years later. I ended up fostering a litter of babies for them since I had experience and they were so supportive and provided everything. Outside of my personal experience, they have been a lifesaver for my hometown. There are very few resources for people in Person County, especially when it comes to feral cats and TNR. Though they are out of Durham County, they have done TNR on hundreds of cats from Person County. I am an admin for our local Lost and Found Pets group, and have sent many people their way to try to stop the overpopulation problem. I can’t imagine how bad things would be if they weren’t always so responsive and willing to help with not only TNR, but emergency medical cases as well. Recently there was also a case in Person County where a litter of seven one year old pups were left to be put outdoors in the elements after the rescuer who had them suddenly passed away. The post was shared over a thousand times but no help came after over a month. I reached out to one of their volunteers, Jacky, and she immediately made contact with the friend who was housing them to go meet them. She coordinated with multiple rescues who all helped to vet and take not only all seven of the pups who needed help, but another as well. In addition, she helped multiple others from the same property that were also in desperate need as their caretaker was unable to properly care for them. It truly amazes me how much they are willing to help.
55Independent Animal Rescue has helped me and my friends with several dogs in our community. They always respond to do what they can to help. They are an invaluable resource for animals in need.

55Thirteen years ago, I was blessed to adopt my dog Norman from Animal Protective Services of Durham. The staff and volunteers are dedicated to the care and safety of all their animals.
55As Durham County’s only animal shelter, APS does so much with the limited resources it has. The staff pour their hearts and energies into every animal that comes through the door, and also work hard to connect with the broader Durham community—finding new locations and events to showcase adoptable dogs and cats, providing a food pantry to those struggling to take care of their pets, and using local and social media to get the word out about APS’ amazing animals. APS also has a wonderful network of volunteers who walk dogs, socialize cats and pocket pets, assist with play groups, and foster everyone from bottle babies to hospice seniors. I’m on my second APS alum and couldn’t wish for better companions!

After all three of these steps are completed, the final step is to sign the adoption contract and make the adoption donation fee. Your new pet will be up to date on the necessary vaccinations required by the age of the dog at time of adoption, spayed or neutered, on heartworm preventative and flea and tick meds, micro-chipped, groomed, and well on his or her way with basic obedience and house training. All our dogs will be adopted out with a microchip, collar and leash, and a PMR&R tag.

Having grown up in busy Santa Barbara, Jen, an introvert from an early age, would seek out solitude and serenity away from tourists attractions and droves of people visiting from elsewhere. “My grandparents own 60 acres about a 30 minute drive from here, and I grew up spending every summer and every holiday visiting them on the ranch,” Jen explained. “In Santa Barbara, we wouldn't go to the beach on the weekend because that's where everybody was, so you'd find places off the beaten path where the tourists weren't.
